For a while, I got out of the habit of reading webcomics. In fact, it’s been so long I’m ashamed to admit that I can’t even remember what I was reading before my break. Luckily, being part of the Vaginal Fantasy Book Club Discord group has reinvigorated not only my reading by giving me plenty of ideas for books to add to my TBR, but also suggestions for webcomics to check out.
It started with a recommendation to read The Sea in You by Jessi Sheron, which is a free webcomic you can read over on Tapas. It’s about a girl who befriends a mermaid and it is absolutely delightful. The story, the characters, the art… everything. Highly recommended and I binge-read all 45 episodes in a day.
So that got me started with remembering how much I absolutely love well-done webcomics. I ended up on Webtoons and instantly found myself following several of the romance comics on there. I haven’t even left the romance category yet and I’m probably already following too many comics to keep up with, but I am in heaven.
First, I binged “Assassin Roommate” by Monica Gallagher. Mystery, romance, intrigue, ass-kicking — this comic seriously has everything I could ever want in a comic and I can’t wait for the next episode.
Then, the recently-launched “The Devil is a Handsome Man” caught my eye. I’ll admit, I’m not super sure about this one yet, but it kind of has the same vibe as something Matt Fraction or Kelly Sue Deconnick would write, so I’m pretty sure I’ll be into it. Not quite sure what’s going on at the moment, but it’s only 5 episodes in and I’m interested to see what happens next.
And I’m currently in the midst of an obsessive binge-read of “My Dear Cold-Blooded King” by lifelight. This comic… oh my god. The writing is amazing, the story is keeping me completely engaged and the artwork is gorgeous. I killed my phone twice today reading it and I want more. One of the best parts (and this was what I loved about reading webcomics and writing web fiction before) is reading the comments from readers. The shipping is strong with this one.
So those are the ones I’m currently reading, but I have several more on my list that I’m going to try to catch up with in the next few weeks and now that I’m back into reading webcomics, I know I’ll be on the lookout for more excellent ones in the future.
